Adare, "Ireland's prettiest village," is a lovely day excursion from Glocca Morra B&B. From the thatched roof cottages on the main road to the magnificent internationally renowned Adare Manor Hotel and championship golf course, this village captures the essence of old Ireland and photos are a must have. Don't miss the ruins of Desmond Castle just before the village and you'll then see a span of Irish history from the 13th century to the present. Afterwards take a nature walk through the Clare Glens along the River Clare in County Tipperary. Set within protected forest, this is a hiker's dream through Ireland's enchanted land. Visions of leprechauns and pixies abound. Bring your runner's (sneakers) or hiking boots and perhaps a change of socks depending on how close to the rapids and many small waterfalls you wish to adventure around. |
Directions From Glocca Morra, turn right out of the drive towards Killaloe. In Killaloe turn left across the bridge to Ballina. After the bridge turn right at the mini roundabout and follow this road straight through the roundabout to the M7 to Limerick. Turn right in the direction of Limerick on the M7 and follow signs to the N20 and then the N21 to Adare. Just before entering Adare you'll see the ruins of Desmond Castle on your left hand side. If you wish to take photos you may turn right into the church parking lot just around the bend past the bridge. Continue on the N21 into Adare and hopefully you'll find parking along the main road. There is the Adare Heritage Centre on the right and the thatched roof cottages on your left. You may walk up (or drive) through the gates of Adare Manor Hotel and stroll along their well maintained gardens. Back to the thatched cottages for lunch or light refreshment. Retrace the road back to the N21 in the direction of Limerick. Follow to the N20 and the M7. Exit at the R445 to the roundabout and take the 3rd exit for the R503 off the roundabout in the direction of Newport. Follow this road through the picturesque town of Newport until you see a GAA field on your right hand side. Take the immediate right turn in the direction of the Clare Glens. Follow this road to the parking area on the right hand side. The entrance to the Clare Glens is just down the road to the left at the bridge and you can take either the high trail around the glens or the low trail and maneuver around the rapids and small waterfalls. Back to the parking area, retrace the road back to the R503 and turn left through Newport. About 1 km outside of Newport take a right turn to Birdhill and the R445. Turn right on the R445 and then left to Killaloe/Ballina. In Ballina, turn left at the mini roundabout across the bridge to Killaloe. Turn right after the bridge in the direction of Scarriff and 8km (5 miles) later you'll be back at Glocca Morra B&B! |
